  • Transition to Motherhood/Parenting

“Trust yourself.   You know more than you think you do.” – Benjamin Spock

Becoming a mom is one of the greatest mental and emotional adjustments a woman will make in her lifetime. So much time and attention is placed on the pregnancy and birth that much is lost for what comes next.  Many new moms describe feeling that they are “in a fog” the first few months after birth due to the sleep deprivation and keeping up with feedings and baby’s other needs.  The lack of time for self-care can be jarring, contributing to any postpartum mood disorders, and feelings of isolation or overwhelm.  Relationships with spouses, parents, friends and other children may change in sometimes unexpected ways.  Of course, this adjustment is ever changing, as babies grow to toddlers and toddlers grow to big kids.

    Parenting

Parenting is the hardest job in the world.  Children challenge us in ways we never imagined.  Of course, we have all heard this said countless times, but it’s often not fully realized until we are in the weeds of day-to-day parenting of our children.  Well-meaning family members and friends may be quick to dole out unsolicited advice.  Others may judge us for various parenting decisions we make.  Some moms may be seeking practical solutions to behavioral or other problems.  Others may realize that there are unresolved issues remaining in their own childhoods that are making parenting more difficult.

Whether you have a newborn or a house full of adolescents, the therapists at Women’s Counseling of Nashua can help you navigate these various challenges. Many of us are moms, too, and can relate from an authentic place of understanding.  Let us serve as a helpful resource.
