Tamar Teitelman, MA
My name is Tamar, and at the core of my work with clients is building an authentic, empowering relationship that is a safe space for personal exploration and growth. I use a variety of interventions and can tailor my approach to the specific needs of each client. For example, I may provide tools to better help you cope with stress, anxiety and depression. We may discuss how to practice better self-care, talk about how society and culture affect your current struggles, explore your spiritual side, or discuss your relationships and how some dynamics may negatively impact your levels of stress and anxiety.
I really enjoy working with adolescents who may be dealing with stress, anxiety, depression and the many life transitions that happen during this time. I am able to connect well with this age group, while providing helpful tools and strategies to cope with these issues.
I also have a particular interest in supporting individuals coping with infertility, a difficult pregnancy or childbirth experience, or postpartum mood disorders and adjustment problems. This major life transition can trigger old wounds, bringing into question self-identity, and exacerbate existing relationship struggles. It is important to know that you are not alone and you can get through this. You deserve the time and space you need to take care of yourself.
Sometimes we have a hard time expressing our emotions, or even understanding them, through words. Research has shown a strong connection between creativity and our emotions, and often, things that are just below the surface are able to be processed through the use of the arts. My training specialty was in Expressive Arts Therapy techniques, so I love to play with creativity. I have run creative therapy groups, and even using telehealth, have found ways to utilize the arts within therapy. Some of the fun things we’ve done include simply doodling while we talk, exploring emotions through paints, sharing a favorite poem, writing your own play, listening to music or drumming your own rhythm. I’m also open to new ideas! Of course sitting and talking works just fine, too.
My undergraduate degree was in Holistic Psychology with a specialization in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University. This program taught me to explore one’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health as an integrated system. Between college and grad school I had my two babes and worked as an advocate for survivors of interpersonal violence and sexual assault. In addition to this I have attended special trainings in trauma-informed care, LGBTQ mental health, and perinatal mood disorders. I returned to school to complete my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Southern New Hampshire University while being a mom of two toddlers(and during a pandemic!). This had me redefining what self-care means to me and intentionally carving out time to play. As a life-long musical-theater nerd, you can often find me singing and dancing in my kitchen or performing in local theater. I also enjoy time outdoors, gardening, baking, knitting, reading, and being goofy with my family!
