I’ve never talked to a therapist before. I’m used to handling things on my own, or relying on friends and family for support.  How can therapy help me?

Therapy is a unique opportunity to have a trained professional help you
think objectively about yourself and your struggles.  The therapists at Women’s Counseling can help you to develop coping skills, manage your emotions and gain new perspectives about your situation.  We take a non-judgmental approach with each of our clients, and have only your best interests in mind.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication is a great tool to have in the proverbial “tool box” of items needed to manage stress and mental health issues.  This is true particularly when there is a clear biological basis for issues with mood and anxiety, as with perinatal mood disorders.  Medication alone cannot solve all issues, however.  Oftentimes it can be most effective if used in conjunction with therapy.

How does therapy work and how long will it take?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be vary depending on the individual.  Generally, your therapist will meet with you weekly to start, as there is a lot of information that needs to be collected.  Therapists at Women’s Counseling have training in a variety of forms of therapy, and will tailor their therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

Can I bring my baby with me to sessions?

Yes,  It’s entirely up to you if you would like to bring your baby with you. Some moms find that bringing their baby eases their mind and enables them to schedule appointments without needing to think of childcare. Other mothers prefer to schedule their appointment when their partner is home or childcare is arranged in order to have time to focus on just themselves.

My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual counseling or come together?

If you are uncertain about whether it would be more beneficial for you to attend individual or couples therapy, please contact us and one of our therapists will speak with you about your options.
